Creating, switching, and renaming

Everything to do with takes lives in the take menu in the editor header — the pill that reads Take: (name), next to the song title. Click it to see the song’s takes (the main take first, with a ✓ next to the one you’re on) and the actions below.

In the take menu, choose + New take…. Give it a name if you like — something like “Half-time chorus” — or leave it blank and Tabula names it Take 2, Take 3, and so on.

A new take starts as a copy of the take you’re looking at right now, then opens on its own so you can start editing. Anything you do in it stays in that take until you decide to merge it back; the take you forked from is untouched.

Open the take menu and pick any take to jump to it. Each take is its own independent version, so switching fully loads that take and its own live collaboration session — the take you’re editing is always the one named in the pill. The main take is always pinned to the top of the list, so it’s one click back to the keeper.

Choose ✎ Rename this take… to change the current take’s name. This is just a label — renaming doesn’t touch a single note, and it’s separate from the song’s title. Take names have to be unique within the set, so each one stays easy to tell apart.

Choose ⋔ Take graph… for a read-only picture of the whole set: the main take as a trunk, each take branching off where it was forked, and the recent history of merges between them (and which direction each one went). The take you’re on is highlighted. It’s a quick way to get your bearings when a song has grown a few versions. The take graph is available to everyone who can see the song, viewers included.

An unused take can sit quietly in the list forever — nothing forces you to tidy up. When you do want one gone, switch to it and choose 🗑 Delete this take… from the take menu. The confirm dialog says what’s true: the take goes to the band’s trash, the song and its other takes are untouched, and a band admin can restore it for 7 days — after that it’s gone. Any member who can edit may delete a take; restoring is an admin action, so don’t count on undoing it yourself. On confirm you’re taken back to the main take.

The entry only appears on side takes. The main take can’t be deleted from the take menu — deleting it would take the whole set with it, so that decision stays where songs are deleted, in the song library.

You can also delete a take as part of merging it into Main, with a checkbox on the merge dialog.
